blood type
Blood type is a genetic property of blood determined according to the sugar markers (a large group of antigens) found on the surface of the red blood cells. The trait is inherited from generation to generation.
There are two main classifications of human blood, ABO groups and Rh factor:
ABO groups are determined by two genetic markers, A and B. If a person carries both A markers, their blood type is A. If a person carries both B markers, their blood type is B. If a person carries only one of the markers, their blood type is AB. If a person does not carry any of the markers, their blood type is O.
The Rh factor is determined by additional genetic markers. If a person carries these markers, his blood type is positive (+). If a person does not carry these markers, his blood type is negative (-).
Transfusions between incompatible blood types can cause serious consequences and even death, hence the great importance of distinguishing between the different blood types.
